Vaping Industry

The Vaping Industry Association of New Zealand (VIANZ) was established as a membership body to represent and support New Zealand’s manufacturers, retailers, and importers. Our aim is a smokefree New Zealand, and we are keen to work proactively with the Government to achieve that goal. Both tobacco and pharma are barred from membership so this ensures our work is free from influence and enables us to provide a trusted and credible voice on policy matters that is independent. Like other membership organisations we work as a collective so that our representation is industry wide and not limited to the views of any one company.

VIANZ believes in stronger enforcement of retailers not complying with the regulations is required, alongside higher penalties for those who breach the regulations. We believe the below 6 points provide the roadmap Government must undertake to protect our young people from vaping.

Ban of single use vaping devices from the New Zealand market.

As with other controlled products (liquor) a license is required to operate as a Specialist Vape Retailer (SVR).

To obtain a license an SVR must be a stand-alone operating site.

Heavier penalties for businesses that sell to minors or import or sell non-compliant products.

Authorities to increase enforcement of the legislative and regulatory SVR requirements.

Online sellers to incorporate driver’s licence and/or passport verification software into the sales process.

We work to ensure customers can have complete confidence in the quality of their vaping products and nicotine e-liquid devices.

We provide staff equipped to educate customers on the most suitable product to meet their non-smoking needs.

We do not support youth vaping and each organisation has policies in place to ensure under-18 access is prevented.
